On PC's that have more than one port and do not use eth0 this means the network does not come up. NOTE: This also affects the installation since netconfig is used during the install process. I have not tried all variations of the setup program - i was using the dhcp option. Perhaps the utility may allow selection of the port under other circumstances - e.g. when using a hard coded IP address. Message-ID: <20051207221007.11F5DFA0025@genesis.frugalware.org> When using a Nebula DigiTV USB tuner connected to the USB port, no /dev/dvb entries are created by hotplug so the device cannot be accessed. As per an IRC conversation with V Miklos I tried adding two lines to the hotplug config files but this did not help. However these lines are present in other distros and I believe they are required. My current belief is that this problem relates to the kernel and the options used during its compile. DVB requires I2C (bitbanging) support, module loading (i am sure that must be present) and of course DVB support. Distro PCLinuxOS 0.92 (Mandrake based) with the standard supplied kernel ecognises my tuner and builds these entries. It has the same lines of code in the config file as suggested by V Miklos. Note that when I hand built a kernel usinf the standard kernel sources and used this kernel instead, the /dev/dvb entries did not appear, even though I selected what I believed were the required options, e.g. dvb support, I2c support, etc. It looks like there must be some setting or combination of settings within the kernel that are needed to make DVB support work. If you don't know what it's like, it's something like this: Setup Disks Select & Install Packages Configure and a few others. The good thing about it is that if you have a broken install or some other special need (say, you messed up something in the configuration and want to go back and fix it), you can jump right to the point you want. First of all thank you for dealing with "blender" I know its not so easy to build it properly for a distribution (I know many unsuccessful attempts in other distributions). My request is that if you build blender 2.40 (I am sure you will do it soon, it has so many new features) please compile "yafray" also. It is an external raytracer, which I tried to install on myself, but it could not work properly with the frugalware version of blender. The solution should be at the fingertips of the builders of blender. Summarizing: please build a "yafray" package. Sorry for being long! The screen then turns solid blue, in the middle there is a definite rectangle (approx 800x600 in size) which is black, with vertical white lines in it. From this point, there's no way back to console. Tried: Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Alt+SysRq, Ctrl+Alt+Fn, Ctrl+C... Installation stuck at this point, however, the machine did not freeze, because HDD activity was detected while trying to escape with the above key combos. Solution: Boot to runlevel 3, set the following parameter from "No" to "Yes" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Option "UseBIOS" "Yes" Reference URLs: http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T21 The one including the solution: http://hardware.mcse.ms/archive57-2005-2-146636.html file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/html/savage.4.html "Option "UseBIOS" "boolean" Enable or disable use of the video BIOS to change modes. Ordinarily, the savage driver tries to use the video BIOS to do mode switches. This generally produces the best results with the mobile chips (/MX and /IX), since the BIOS knows how to handle the critical but unusual timing requirements of the various LCD panels supported by the chip. To do this, the driver searches through the BIOS mode list, looking for the mode which most closely matches the xorg.conf mode line. Some purists find this scheme objectionable. If you would rather have the savage driver use your mode line timing exactly, turn off the UseBios option. I attempted to install .4pre1 to a 600X IBM laptop. During the install i recieved a error message. All I could gather was something about a error with a module but I could not read the error as the message box was being covered by the partition box. I believe the way a error msg of this type is delivered needs to be addressed. Also despite my attempts by turning off acpi when the kernel booted i could not get .4pre1 to install. .3stable also installed fine on the same laptop.
