If you are lucky, you can lay that cable to the next room... * an auth'ed user is needed to run any program listening on the serial port, at worst case a getty with that users' rights. * by running that getty you can get no extra privileges Enabling user access to the ports makes Frugalware more useful. One possible solution is to add the user by default to the uucp group upon creation. And please consider if access to serial ports are denied, an user can attach an usb2rs232 adapter and do whatever -- denying access to usb-based serial ports render unusable many devices (like the Palm TX PDA or the Siemens ME75 phone) unusable as a regular user. I am intending to use Rosegarden (midi sound sequencer) with my Soundblaster Live soundcard. In order to support midi i need to load a soundfont into the soundcard. This is accomplished using the sfxload utility which is part of the awesfx package. This package is not currently in the Frugalware repos but I have requested it. In the meantime I have compiled the package from source. When I run I get this message: barny@rabbit:~$ sfxload 8mbgm_plus13.sf2 /dev/sequencer: No such file or directory barny@rabbit:~$ It looks to me like the default output device is not being set up by Udev - but I have no idea what device to use. I have tried a few (such as /dev/audio or /dev/midi) but they do not work. The soundcard seems properly configured by Alsa and sound works ok with other apps and with the OS. I can play a CD or DVD and get great sound. I am 90% sure this worked ok with a pre1 or pre2 version of 0.4, but I am now using a clean install of 0.4 release and it no longer works. I have just installed Ubunutu Dapper Drake Flight 6 onto another partition of the same machine with an identical hardware configuration (nothing changed - even in the BIOS - absolutely identical). I was able to install awesfx direct from the Ubunto repos via Synaptic rather than having to compile from source. When I run the exact same command I get no error message and Rosegarden works fine afterwards with midi sound. Looking at the "/dev/sequencer" part of the error message suggests this might be Udev related perhaps? Hope someone can help. This is a real waste -- like, for a user who wants only english and german, he can enable those two locales in a file, say /etc/locale.gen, and by default only english is enabled, or something else a user chooses while install. It is not really a question of hard disk space - but why have zh_ZA enabled if I am never going to use it ? Arch, debian have already implemented this change. The database that the original locate uses is usually updated only once a day, so newer files cannot be located right away. The behavior of rlocate is the same as slocate, but it also maintains a diff database that gets updated whenever a new file is created. This is accomplished with rlocate kernel module and daemon. The rlocate kernel module can be compiled only with Linux 2.6 kernels. http://rlocate.sourceforge.net/ in the /etc/rc.d/rc.rlocated (if created) should include 1. rmmod capability 2. modprobe rlocate 3. rlocated //start the daemon other requirements: groupadd rlocate mkdir -p /var/log/rlocate URL: http://bugs.frugalware.org/?do=details&do=details&id=634 From bozo at dev.null Thu Apr 20 11:40:03 2006 From: bozo at dev.null (Frugalware Bug Tracking System) Date: Thu Apr 20 11:40:05 2006 Subject: [Frugalware-bugs] php ldap extension Message-ID: <20060420094004.2D98DFB4005@genesis.frugalware.org> I've just tried to install the phpLDAPadmin program on my Frugalware Current system. I noticed, that this program requires the ldap module for php. The ldap.so php module sould be added in /etc/php.ini (extension=ldap.so). But there isn't any ldap.so file in my system, however the following packages are installed: openldap 2.3.21-1 python-ldap 2.2.0-1 php 5.1.2-2 So I think the php which is in Frugalware current was complied without ldap support. About GYachE Improved (a.k.a. GYachI) ------------------------------------- Welcome to the home of GyachE Improved (GyachI) program. This is a fork from Gyach Enhanced Yahoo! client for Linux operating systems. It was born purely out of impatience. Since there was no progress on Gyach Enhanced for about a year, a couple of impatient GYach Enhanced users decided to continue development of that client, fearing that original author Erica Andrews lost interest or abandoned project altogether. Therefore, in the true spirit of Open Source we, the developers, thought of simply "carrying on the torch". This Yahoo! client for Linux operating system supports almost all of the features you would expect to find on the official Windows Yahoo! client: Voice chat, webcams, faders, 'nicknames', audibles, avatars, display images, and more. Yet, it remains very light-weight and memory-friendly. GyachE Improved uses Gtk-2 for its user interfaces (Gtk-2 2.0.6 or better required).
