Comment (by Devil505):
It's a problem with pacman, especially here:
http://git.frugalware.org/gitweb/gitweb.cgi?p=pacman-g2.git;a=blob;f=lib/libftp/ftplib.c;h=bf95782ef849a443ad24acc78f22670f655277e9;hb=HEAD
function socket_wait
Vmiklos, this bug *must* be fixed IMHO, many newbies can't try FW due to
this bug :/

Comment (by vmiklos):
OK, let's see what can we do here. (Half-joke: "you must fix this bug" is
term of a paid job, not when spending your free time on something.)
Did Elentir pont you that function? It would be interesting to analyze the
socket_wait() / net_read() control flow with him on IRC, but I could not
reach him so far.
Anyway, a much easier solution I can imagine is having curl in the setup
initramfs, and use the sample XferCommand in the installer; curl already
has proper timeout support and we already advertise that if you need
perfect network management, you better off with an XferCommand.
How does this later sound?

I would like to help spread availability of a linux game that has been
recently open sourced by encouraging it to be included in package
repositories. I don't use Frugalwre and am not familiar with pacman and
would like to request if anyone else is available to prepare a package for
the game. See http://www.indiedb.com/games/beret/forum/thread/open-source

Comment (by Elentir):
XferCommand can work as a temporary workaround but I guess that I lost
progress bar, download speed, etc in fwife. So this may not be the best
solution (at least for fwife).
About the socket_wait() function, the problem comes when the select return
0 (i.e timeout). It looks like that the server don't send data anymore but
do not close the connection either, so we are stuck in an infinite do-
while() loop. The code handle -1 and > 0 return values but do not handle
0.
Maybe we can fix this by reseting the connection if the select don't
notify any data reception during a long time.

Indeed, XferCommand won't help for fwife. Can you have a look at ftplib,
please? I didn't hack that part so far, so if you could provide a patch
that solves the problem, that would be really great.
Thanks.

Comment (by Elentir):
The aboves patchs needs to be _tested_. It should return an error if the
server takes too much time to send data. I've not tested them yet since
freezes occurs randomly and not with all servers. For now I was unlucky.
The first patch handle select timeout during data transfert. The second
patch pacman-g2 to set a non-zero timeout (by default, it's null and so do
not handle timeouts).

Comment (by vmiklos):
I think test can be done using iptables: set two mirrors in the config,
then start to download a large pkg from the first server. In the meantime
block all traffic to that server using
{{{
iptables -D OUTPUT -p tcp -d -j DROP
}}}
The old behavior is that pacman just hangs; if it switches to the next
mirror then your patches are correct. :)

The above should be
{{{
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d -j DROP
}}}
(use -D to undo).
Anyway, here is what I get:
{{{
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0xb7fd1185 in socket_wait (ctl=0x8df1350) at ftplib.c:170
170 if((ctl->ctrl->losttime > 0) && (cpt >=
ctl->ctrl->losttime))
(gdb) print ctl
$1 = (netbuf *) 0x8df1350
(gdb) print ctl->ctrl
$2 = (netbuf *) 0x0
}}}
Seems you try to read ctl->ctrl->losttime when ctl->ctrl is null.

Comment (by Elentir):
I updated the patch for libftp, it should fix the segfault (if not please
give me a backtrace) and a little fix on FtpClose().
For the pacman-g2 part, I don't know how to made a clean patch :
Now FtpGet / HttpGet return an error if the server timeout, so I see two
solution :
-> return a new error like PM_ERR_CONNECTION_LOST and let pacman-g2/fwife
handle this case by restarting
the download.
-> restart the download directly into libpacman (loop on
_pacman_downloadfiles_forreal() or something)
In case of a timeout, "FtpLastResponse(control)" contains
"strerror(ETIMEDOUT)".

We already have a MaxTries (see man pacman-g2) which is handled inside
libpacman. Setting that to something like 5 would solve the bug, I guess.
Will test the patch in a bit. :)

I also had this problem occur soon after a recent "pacman -Syu". To
resolve it I copied a "gdm.css" file from a Fedora 16 installation.

Ok I hope this is OK now! I fixed some bugs in libftp in the latest patch.
It's happy that download usually works well because just a little error
and everything crash :D
I put some remarks here about the fixes :
- libpacman always consider that FtpLastResponse() return a non-null value
for example line 500 of server.c without checking for null values. This is
always the case except when HttpGet() failed! It's happy that this
function never fail in practice. In this special case, it was a bug in
libftp so now it should never occurs anymore.
- it looks like that a similar segfault occurs if select() return an error
in socket_wait(). Fortunately, nobody have ever seen a select() returning
an error (at least in this world) :D

Comment (by Elentir):
I updated the libpacman patch too. In case of a timeout it now leave the
function with PM_ERR_RETRIEVE error. The reason is that if it does not
leave then it try to download on the same server and hangs if the protocol
is ftp:// or enters in an infinite loop with http:// (if of course the
server remains down)
But now MaxTries don't work, I see this in sync.c :
if(_pacman_downloadfiles(current->servers, ldir, files) == -1) {
_pacman_log(PM_LOG_WARNING, _("failed to retrieve some files from
%s\n"), current->treename);
trans->state = STATE_INTERRUPTED;
RET_ERR(PM_ERR_RETRIEVE, -1);
}
=> When _pacman_downloadfiles() fail, it just return with an error and
don't try to download again.

Comment (by vmiklos):
Hi Elentir,
Excellent, now I don't get any crash. :)
MaxTries is mostly about corrupted download, ie when the download succeeds
but the sha1sum is wrong. I've now improved this a bit on top of your
patches, so when connection times out it tries the next server. I could
not get this to work with resuming downloads, so in case there is a
timeout (only in that case) the file is downloaded from scratch, but from
the next server.
All pushed to pacman-g2.git, thanks!
(Commit 9a704bd and 2216edc to fix the hang, f6281bc to respect maxtries
when connection times out.)
I guess now all we need is to set maxtries to 5 (or so) in the installer,
then we can close this bug.

On Ubuntu, the tty login message looks great, see

I like the number of updates for example.
Maybe is it possible to make the similar thing on Frugalware.

Hm, what about a bash script that updates /etc/issue from cron? That we
could put that script to the frugalware package, I guess as a start the
cronjob could be commented out by default. So users wanting this feature
would only have to remove a singled hashmark.

One of my must have features in an distribution is the possibility to
encrypt the whole system except for /boot. You can find an detailed howto
on the [https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/System_Encryption_with_LUKS
Arch Wiki] or for
[https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedFilesystemLVMHowto Ubuntu].
Generally it isn't very hard. Frugalware have a live system (still beta, i
know) and there you can install cryptsetup-luks from the repos, partition
your harddrive (ca. 200MB for /boot and the rest for the encryption, name
it sda2), encrypt sda2 with luks, create a lvm volume inside the luks
volume, create "logical partitions" there.
Up to this point there are no problems with frugalware. But when you start
the installation with fwife, it doesn't recognize the lvm volumes. This is
a big problem.
Further i don't know, even if the installation would succeed, if the
frugalware kernel has enough modules loaded to boot lvm volumes from such
encryptet partitions.
I think it would be very great if frugalware makes it possible to install
a fully encrypted system. Unfortunately till then i'm not gonna install it
on my notebook:p
I don't have a very deep knowledge of the exact implementation of
encryption methods, so i thing maybe i can't help (maybe at least a
little).
By the way: the prettiest way to encrypt the system would be a possibility
of encryption in the installer, but i understand if this would be too
difficult.

Is it right that drakut create a initramfs image for loading additional
modules on boot? If this was the drakut you meant, right, i think it
recognizes lvm volumes and luks volumes (at least the manual page gives
rise to hopes). But theres still the problem with the installation of the
base system, drakut is only vor initfamfs, the system with lvm etc must be
installed separately...
.. and it's also possible that i only heaven't enough knowledge on this
things...

You're right: first we need to make hard things possible, a second step is
to make them easy (by adding support for it in the installer).
Creating an empty partition is not too hard (just google for a howto), the
question is if dracut (and our dracut package) can assemble it in the
initrd, so that encrypted partition can be actually your / filesystem.
Of course, when using lvm on /, a separate small /boot partition is
necessary, but that's not a problem at all, that ''is'' supported by the
installer. :-)

Comment (by radioactive):
I know that a /boot partition is no problem for the installer;) The
problem are on the lvm/luks part of it all and I'm afraid I do not know
enough about the whole thing how to implement such things. Let me build
some simple packages before I'm hacking some installer code:D
I can understand if there are too few people who using encryption and that
it's not very important for the development, but it would be a great
feature;)

Comment (by vmiklos):
Nah, what I wanted to point out: first just write up some documentation
how do you do the encrypted lvm creation manually. If you want to test it,
you already have to get dracut play with it -- and only ''then'' poke at
the installer code. (At least that's how I would split the problem to two
parts.)

Comment (by radioactive):
Okay, but I already mentioned the problem why I can't install it manually
and play with dracut. In frugalware you have all packages you need for an
encryption I think. Especially fwlive is very useful for it. I just bootet
into the live system and then did the following (taken from Arch Linux
wiki but also works under frugalware with only little differences):
1. Partitionioning the harddrive:
{{{
/dev/sda1 - ca. 100MB (boot partition)
/dev/sda2 - the rest of the harddrive
}}}
2. Installing "cryptsetup-luks"
3. modprobe dm-crypt
4. Encrypt the second partition:
{{{
# cryptsetup-luks -c aes-xts-plain -y -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sda2
}}}
5. map the encrypted device into /dev/mapper
{{{
# cryptsetup-luks luksOpen /dev/sda2 lvm
}}}
6. The lvm part:
create lvm and volume group:
{{{
# pvcreate /dev/mapper/lvm
# vgcreate main /dev/mapper/lvm
}}}
creating some "partitions"(they aren't real partitions)
{{{
# lvcreate -L 10GB -n root main
# lvcreate -L 2GB -n swap main
# lvcreate -l 100%FREE -n home main
}}}
7. Start the greaphical installer.
8. Problem: In every distro I used till now the installer recognized the
mapped lvm and offers the possibility to select the root and home
partition from the lvm volume. But fwife doesn't offers this. I think the
problem is, that fwife just juses gparted (If i read it correctly from the
sourcecode, not yet completed to read it;) and theres the problem I think.
Gparted doesn't recognizes lvm volumes, at least as far as I know.
Maybe someone just looks into the source of the arch installer and what
they are using, beacause the installer there supports that kind of
volumes. And only if fwife supports such volumes you can reach the point
where you can try to play with dracut I think...

Comment (by vmiklos):
Can you try the console installer? IIRC I once used an LVM on /home, and I
could use the console installer to format + decide where to mount once I
created the LV manually (you can use fwlive for that, then just reboot and
boot the install cd).
Thanks.

Comment (by radioactive):
I did the following:
Boot into fwlive and created a /boot partion and a second partition
(sda5), which i partitioned with ext4 and then did point 6 from above (the
lvm part). Then I rebooted into the normal installation media and then
walked through the installation to the partitioning part. Skipped this
(the partitioning programs doesn't recognize an lvm volume) I have to
configure the swap partion. And there I only can select sda1 (boot) or
sda5, but none of the "logical" lvm partitions.
If I did something wrong or you just meant something different, just say
so.

Comment (by vmiklos):
Thanks for the testing, then indeed even just reusing an existing LVM
partition as (e.g.) /home is not possible in the console installer --
while I thought it's possible. It should not be too hard to hack setup.git
to add support for that (just using existing LVM partitions), though -- I
hope. :)
