Subject: [Frugalware-forums] about pacman
Message-ID: <2352.493b9d78@forums.frugalware.org>
Hello everybody,
I think there are problems with pacman.
here its my problem.
bash-3.2# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
(1/1) frugalware-current [################] 100% 440K 62.0K/s 00:00:07
:: Starting local database upgrade...
:: Replace gst-plugins-good-cdio with frugalware-current/gst-plugins-ugly-cdio? [Y/n]
resolving dependencies... done.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: gst-plugins-good-cdio: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
Above I selected to replace the gst plugin while here choose to not replace the plugin
bash-3.2# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
frugalware-current is up to date
:: Starting local database upgrade...
:: Replace gst-plugins-good-cdio with frugalware-current/gst-plugins-ugly-cdio? [Y/n] n
resolving dependencies... done.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: gst-plugins-good-cdio: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
As you can see there is no difference between the selection I made. And this is, IMHO, the first problem.
The second one...
Since gst-plugins-good=0.10.9 is required, I tried to install it
bash-3.2# pacman -S gst-plugins-good
resolving dependencies... done.
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: gst-plugins-good-aalib: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-annodex: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-avc1394: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-cairo: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-cdio: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-dv: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-esd: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-flac: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-gconf: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-gdkpixbuf: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-halelements: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-jpeg: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-png: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-shout: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-speex: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-taglib: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-video4linux2: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-videobox: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-wavpack: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
:: gst-plugins-good-ximage: requires gst-plugins-good=0.10.9
As you can see I cannto install a pkg since its required by other pkgs. We say... the dog which eats its own tail.
And a final consideration.
IMHO its wrong that if a package miss a dependecy ALL other packages cant be upgraded. E.g. Due to the abve mentioned problem, I cannot install the kernel or an update for MySql or whatever... Only the packages which require those dependencies MUST not be installed.
Augh! :d
Have a great Sunday

You should use gfpm. But if you'd like to use the command line, then
just type "man pacman-g2"

pacman -R gst-plugins-good-cdio , pacman-g2 -Syu , pacman-g2 -S gst-plugins-ugly-cdio will probably solve this..

Subject: [Frugalware-forums] LostIRC - error when compiling manually
Message-ID: <235e.49408323@forums.frugalware.org>
Details - I have installed Frugalware 1.0 pre1, with all installed packages up to date as at about 3 days ago.
I'm trying to manually compile an application that's not current in the repos - LostIRC. My aim is to write a Frugalbuild for this application but I first wanted to manually compile it (but not install it). Soon after the first step "./configure", a number of messages appear but the step stops with the message "configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
". I've googled this and the suggestions are that I'm missing the gcc compiler or one of its associated packages. I've checked and believe that I have installed everything that's relevant. What else could I be missing?

Out of curiousity... Is it possible to remove the System V symlinkage from Frugalware's initscripts, and make it do things the old Slackware way? As of now Frugalware is looking like a very promising alternative to Arch (which is sort of broken at the moment), but before I leap in I'd like to know if I can make things work more in line with my preferences in Linux distros.

fixed with galeon-2.0.4-2 (wait the server synchronisation) last time you can use http://bugs.frugalware.org/ ;)

Message-ID: <236b.494fc92d@forums.frugalware.org>
At some stage I had to use the nvidia-96xx driver, it is not required anymore because 'nv' will do.
So how the heck do I get rid of it?
bash# pacman -R nvidia-96xx (or pacman -Rk nvidia-96xx)
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
nvidia-96xx: is required by libcm

nvidia-96xx: is required by xorg-server
nvidia-96xx: is required by xscreensaver-data
nvidia-96xx: is required by alsaplayer
So - I used a little trick from archlinux's pacman ...
bash# pacman -S libgl (also tried pacman -Sf libgl)
resolving dependencies... done.

Message-ID: <2373.4951daf7@forums.frugalware.org>
Hello great people of the frugalware community.
I have an odd request. I am currently attempting an install of frugalware on my old laptop. During the install, it has seemed to have entered an infinite loop. It is trying to make kconfig but my system clock is dead so it keeps being angry about the files being from the future compared to my system clock. It has been doing the same thing for hours, does anyone know of anything that I can do to fix it other than restarting my computer and starting the install over? Thank you.

Subject: [Frugalware-forums] USB access to Camera (non root) and Webcam
(none ?)
Message-ID: <2374.49520fb0@forums.frugalware.org>
Hello everyone,
I have had 2 problems for some time (my kernel is 2.6.27 because I used to monitor developments Frugalware along the water) :
1. My Webcam is no longer recognized:
I know that gspca [when it was a lone package had recognized my webcam with a s.... image but it was good enough] is now included in the kernel and I read that versions 2.6.27 of kernel have initialization problems of USB devices [my SpeedTouch octopus modem for example ... I have used since a router until it works again] ... whatever I do, dmesg and lsmod show me that everything is loaded (I have a compatible sonixb) but my webcam never comes out ... always invisible of all software
2. My camera is more accessible by non-root:
a. I (non root) am in the group 'camera' (like 'hald')
b. as root, I see everything I could want and do what I want
c. HAL detects and propose actions that lead to nothing [Digikam opening, opening of the camera directory, etc.] ... because I'm not root (including digikam camera panel)
d. gphoto2 --auto-detect as non-root identifies the camera, the port and address ... but that's all!
e. before 2.6.27 kernel and / or new HAL and / or UDEV 1.32 it has worked like a charm (HAL/UDEV policies look okay - I'm not familiar with those)
The USB sticks and the printer are okay ... what is blocking access to the camera (and Webcam) ?
Thank you for any ideas you could have

kernel (2.6.26-1 -> 2.6.26-2solaria1)
kernel-docs (2.6.26-1 -> 2.6.26-2solaria1)
kernel-headers (2.6.26-1 -> 2.6.26-2solaria1)
kernel-source (2.6.26-1 -> 2.6.26-2solaria1)
madwifi (0.9.4-12 -> 0.9.4-13solaria1)
ndiswrapper (1.53-5 -> 1.53-6solaria1)
nvidia (173.14.12-2 -> 173.14.12-3solaria1)
virtualbox (1.6.2-5 -> 1.6.2-6solaria1)
I cannot read my burnt DVDs, however there are no problems with a CD disk, kind of strage right?.
I use KDE. If I put a burnt DVD disk in the drive, notthing happens, it just spinnes up. If I do this with a CD disk I can see the substance in Kongueror. If I open Kongueror and write in the location bar /media/sr0
then I get this "the file or the directory doesn't exist"
"dmesg |grep sr0" says
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
and sr0 exists in /dev directory
I have tried to log into Windows on the same computer, when I do this, there are no problems when reading data on the DVD-R disk that I have burnt using K3b
What is wrong?

Is it a regular data disk? If so, did you try mounting it manually to see
if that at least works? Try something like mount /dev/sr0 /mnt or mount
/dev/cdrom /mnt. If it is a video disk, then you may need a package you
don't have installed.

Is it a regular data disk, and I can mount it with "mount /dev/cdrom /mnt " But only as root.
I can not mount it with "mount /dev/sr0 /mnt"
But it was not necessary before upgrading. Before upgrade I just put the DVD disk in the drive as normal user, and my data came up in Kongueror.

Its possible its a problem with HAL. Does your user have the proper permissions? Since regular mount can mount the disk, this isn't the issue. Also, please try initiating KDE on a fresh user and see if that resolves the issue, after giving them the proper permissions. If this solves the problem, then perhaps your KDE configuration data has issues?

Could you perhaps give some examples? Or maybe even explain in some detail what it is you mean?

I have tried making a new user, but still I cannot read the disk. I still have the same problem. Could you give me some hints as to what I should be looking for?

i think some times is better to ask to the forums and then open a bug report only if it results as a real bug...
..but the mixer device isn't required anymore?
thanks!
