What exactly is on my side? I accept that the installer is reporting mysterious phantom conflicts, but it is not *my* installer! As a user who is trying to install Frugalware, one downloads an iso, be it a net-install or a more complete version, one makes certain choices, often the defaults, and then the installer falls over. How is that on our side? As regards the non-existent intel driver, I quite accept that it is not on the mirrors. I have browsed them, and it definitely is not there. It appears, however, that it was there earlier (during May 2008); or at any rate the installer reported that it was. It certainly appeared on the "expert install" package listings. When I used the "expert install" option to eliminate the driver, that particular fault was no longer reported. But the installer still fell over. I do not seem to be the only person suffering from this problem. Certainly, as regards my own limited experience, I have recently (again, May 2008) had similar problems on at least 3 machines, with both 32- and 64-bit current installations. As regards my own machine, I was fortunate enough to have retained a working copy of Frugalware, so I was able to recover. In another case I was equipped with a copy of 32-bit net-install, a copy of the 32-bit CD1 and a working net connection. After several hours I failed to install Frugalware. I also had a Kubuntu CD with me. Yes, you've guessed it:( I'm left with the only tenable explanation: the installer program is like me: it is old and cranky. I retired. Perhaps the installer program should follow suit? But heck, I *do* so love Frugalware and the way its community works! Just try to install _everything_ using a net-install, 'current', 64-bits and ftp10 as the repo. We have allready established that the offending driver is _not_ part of the repo. If the message about compatibility still persists - I know there is no amount of 'hunting' that will help _me_ solve the problem. They made me to keep the distro on the partition and give it a try from time to time to try to improve the default installation for my needs. However, to spare time, I still have to use other distros (like Linux Mint) most of the time when the job has to be done. I agree, though, that some of my comments are subjective. Today I tried to spend a working day on FW, however, again, when I tried to configure a printer at work, the system complained about "CUPS server" or like. I didn't have time to google for a solution. I usually was able to configure printers with few clicks on most distros I tried. Maybe here there is also a place for improvement for FW. Message-ID: <2144.484ee09f@forums.frugalware.org> I'm not sure, but I do believe there is an error in gnome-panel. I am using xfce4 and I have floating panels which I move next to each other at the bottom of the screen. After the last update of gnome-panel, they both overlapped each other up in the top lefthand corner and I had to change them to 'fixed' in order to move them. Whenever I try 'free', they jump up to the top lefthand corner again. As far as I can see - there has been no xfce-updates that would warrant such a behaviour - and the strange thing is - with 'archlinux' the exactly same happened after gnome-panel was updated. After looking around a bit I also think that chkrootkit is just giving a bunch of false positives. (I'll most likely try to look more into chkrootkit's findings when I have more time to be on the safe side, though.) I was having stability issues with X at the time, so I figured it may have had something to do with what chkrootkit found. I installed the fglxr driver, though, and the stability issue seems to have improved. Certain things still seem to cause problems when running X, though. Does anyone know if this is just a ATI Radeon thing? Dear Frugalware users, I'd like to ask you a simple question. If I had only base packages installed, and I wanted to install a terminal emulator (say, mrxvt), would the X server be installed also? The background for this question: recently I have installed Arch Linux. I did "pacman -S mrxvt", and the terminal emulator was installed. The problem was I had no X server, so I was unable to run the terminal emulator. (I think that the X server should've been installed as well. It wasn't because of the package dependencies.) Now, I'd like to know how such dependencies are resolved in Frugalware. In another words: I'm fed up with fighting dependencies (instead of just using my system), and I'm looking for another distro. I have a pretty good idea on the permissions given by floppy, cdrom, scanner, audio, video, and users. As for the others... uucp (not sure what this group is for) locate (not sure what this group is for) camera (cameras?) storage (same as Slackware's plugdev?) netdev (not sure what this group is for) It would be appreciated if anyone could clarify the meaning of the uucp, locate, camera, storage, and netdev groups for me? My /var/lib/pacman-g2/frugalware is under root ownership as I would expect. However, the subdirectories of /var/lib/pacman-g2/frugalware do not have root ownership on my system.
