I wanted to use this distro (I'm on M$ Linux ATM), but wanted to know a few things first. 1) Can it be installed from the first DVD without the second one (what's in the second DVD image)? 2) Does it have bootsplash or splashy/usplash? 3) Does it have tuxonice (for graphical hibernate/resume support)? 4) Does it have a 2.6.27 kernel (I'm on a rtl8187b wifi card and for x64 support I need that kernel) with both bootsplash and tuxonice preincluded (I know how to compile a kernel, but placing tuxonice/bootsplash is beyond my skills ATM)? 5) Does this distro use the Arch /opt/appname directory structure for application packages installation? Why do you think it's not working? Have you tried it in Frugalware? Several developers and users have notebook with Frugalware (me too) and we can use it. > Splashy is crap. Guess the world gov (M$) paid a visit to this distro already. If you use suspend on your notebook, when will you see the splash? once a month? And some suggestions: 1. Microsoft does not have Linux distribution. 2. If our distro does not fit your needs, please just try another, don't revile our work without giving it a try. Hmm how about installing FW 0.9 stable and compile your own (2.6.27) kernel. As far as suspsend is concerned, many of my friends, and even myself use Frugalware and suspend works on our systems without any issues. Maybe it's a problem with the distro that you're using. The 'errors' you posted have something to do with the broken install of your custom kernel .. or you didn't updated / installed it correctly etc etc. With these errors probably the whole v4l* won't work at all. . > > Quote: >> Probably aMSN does not work with UVC based cams yet ? As long as I know (very few :d) a driver should be error free. Ideally yes but this isn't a driver issue since the HW ( your cam ) works with the SW ( the driver ) with 'some application ( in this case kopete ) ' but not with 'the other one ( in this case aMSN )'. With an broken driver you won't be able to make your cam work with whatever application. If you need to change something, then you should run "xconfig" from console. We don't do any -current snapshots usually , just when we test new features or sometimes for testing bug fixes. Please read the README located in frugalware-current-iso directory , you should use the frugalware-testing-iso directory .. However , see man mkiso and build one by yourself if you want. > > And yes - I know there is one in 'stable' but we are always told _not_ to mix current and stable. How do you want to mix something when you do an 'Network installation?' As long you point the installer to install -current it doesn't really matter what version that net_iso is. I don't want 'testing', I want 'current' - there _should_ be a difference - if there is no difference, I have misunderstood the whole thing! (which may well be the case). And if I use a 32-bit installer (net) and point it to current-x86_64 I'm allright? I seem to recall from an earlier posting in this forum that a user was adviced to go 'grab' a net.iso from the current directory - but again, I may be mistaken ... Start CUPS Oddly, if I enter the command "service cups restart" the resulting status is reported as "Skipping" so instead I do a stop, immediately followed by a start. What I need to know is - how can I automate this? I understand why I have to cat the firmware to the printer each time and, as long the printer prints the output I'm expecting, I'm happy to do whatever's required. Dont know the reason but the kernel decided that that port was /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda as it was configured all other days. It was configured for two days as /dev/sdb then yesterday decided to become /dev/sda again. I dont put the camera into fstab. I have a line in fstab which mounts USB devices and I treat my camera as a USB device the play with it with mc. Then I remove the camera and put another device into that port and so on. I dont use strange programs. I mount it as a device and watch the pics with gqview from mc. Hope you understand what I mean: all what I can do from inside ms, I will do. otherwhis I use GUI programs -- http://imageshack.us http://imageshack.us From crazy at frugalware.org Wed Nov 26 05:35:04 2008 From: crazy at frugalware.org (Gabriel C) Date: Wed Nov 26 05:35:41 2008 Subject: [Frugalware-forums] Re: Re: Mounting camera In-Reply-To: <2341.492c96a4@forums.frugalware.org> References: <2341.492c96a4@forums.frugalware.org> Message-ID: <492CD1F8.8020400@frugalware.org> paparucino wrote: > > crazy wrote on Wed, 26 November 2008 00:11 >> That isn't strange at all , however why do you put that cam into fstab BWT ? > > I dont put the camera into fstab. > I have a line in fstab which mounts USB devices and I treat my camera as a USB device the play with it with mc. > Then I remove the camera and put another device into that port and so on. But this is done automatically , you don't need to put any line in fstab for USB devices. I own like 12 USB sticks , 3 cams , 2 mobile phones some USB webcams and some more USB devices For these I never ever added any line in fstab ..
