When I first read your reply I thought - but wait, if the removable media is read-only - e.g. a CD/DVD - pacman-g2 won't be able to add newly downloaded packages to the cache. I've been thinking about this since then. Now that I'm re-reading your message I am now thinking - AHA! What if I use a USB thumb drive/key as the removable media? pacman-g2 could then happily update its cache because a USB thumb drive/key is read-write. While I would rather not use a USB key for this purpose, it does mean that my pacman-g2 cache is then very portable. I'm hoping to have the use of a netbook soon, so a portable pacman-g2 cache would be very useful in those circumstances. There's another method which someone suggested to me which I'll probably try soon and report here my success or otherwise. In short - thanks for your reply and I'll report here any progress I make. What I'd like to do is create a live installation of Frugalware on a bootable USB thumb drive/key, with all changes being persistent. I've looked at two live distros with persistent changes, and they're both created via the scripts provided at http://www.linux-live.org/. If I use the scripts from this site, am I likely to achieve my dream? I haven't yet tried the scripts, but I hope to do so within the next few weeks.
