I can't find any common cause, because it might crash immediately while GMail's display is loading, or while I'm reading mail, sometimes when GMail has loaded successfully and I'm doing something else. I have loaded Firefox from the command line and can't see any significant messages when it crashes. I have also tried other browsers, including Opera, Midori and Epihpany. I find that the other webkit-based browsers also crash when I access my GMail account. I have reinstalled all the webkit-related packages but still the problem remains. Can anyone suggest what I might do? This is, of course, a real problem because I usually have several tabs open and when FF has a problem with GMail, I lose everything I was working on in all tabs. I'm newcomer. I come from Arch (which I still quite like) looking for a more comfortable out of the box ready alternative. I've just installed Frugalware 1.1 x86_64 (using "current" branch and KDE desktop) on my Compaq CQ61 laptop. So far it works quite well but I have two issues... don't know if they're bugs (I doubt), some misconfiguration (every distro has a little configuration learning time :) or my hardware isn't fully supported: Issue one: Whenever I start my KDE session, kconf_update uses 100% CPU (one of the two cores, actually) and initialization stops at "Initializing system services". If I kill that "kconf_update" process (no need to "kill -9", just "kill"), kconf ends (no surprise  ) and initialization goes on appearantly fine. Anybody had this issue? Issue two: I use evdev, so the only section in xorg.conf is the one refering the video driver (using nvidia propiertary driver). Keyboard and mouse work (both touchpad and external USB one), but keyboard layout is english, while configured "es" (Spanish) into "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi". I copied this file from my Arch installation, which works fine. Do I have to configure something in KDE for it to use HAL settings? I don't know KDE 3.5 as much as KDE 4... Thanks so much in advace. Besides these two issues, Frugalware seems a great dristo to me :) From mikioma at gmail.com Mon Nov 9 13:44:45 2009 From: mikioma at gmail.com (mikioma) Date: Mon, 9 Nov 2009 13:44:45 +0100 (CET) Subject: [Frugalware-forums] Firefox is crashing when view GMail In-Reply-To: <25c3.4af0a830@forums.frugalware.org> Message-ID: <25d0.4af80ebc@forums.frugalware.org> I'm affraid I'm not giving you an answer... but Firefox doesn't use webkit, so if both gecko and webkit based browsers crash while using gmail... To answer your question - Yes, Firefox and the other browsers have only been crashing in GMail. I have heard of users of other Linux distributions complain about Firefox crashing occasionally and I thought this was strange because it ALWAYS been very stable for me. I may have a problem perhaps once a year with Firefox. Now, though, I find that it's crashing often, but only when accessing GMail. I have switched back to FW 1.1 for stability but I might install FF 1.1+ to new partitions and see the results. Thanks again for your reply. I have an old RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro graphics card. I think I need to use the nvidia-71xx driver. I already have the 173xx driver installed and that does not seem to work. I cannot install nvidia-71xx because it conflicts with the nvidia-173xx package. I can't remove that though b/c other packages are depending on it. Any suggestions on how to get the proper driver working?
