When Im asked to set screen resolution there is no way to obtain a working screen. What it's strange is that the installation tool uses the graphical methods and it works very nice. What is the size and resolution used by installing tool so I can set it int input box or what is a surely working resolution? thank you in advance -- http://imageshack.us http://imageshack.us From mforce2 at gmail.com Wed Oct 7 14:14:37 2009 From: mforce2 at gmail.com (Marius Cirsta) Date: Wed, 7 Oct 2009 14:14:37 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [Frugalware-forums] cant configure screen In-Reply-To: <2578.4acc8077@forums.frugalware.org> Message-ID: <2579.4acc862b@forums.frugalware.org> I've been having trouble with the utility that configures xorg.conf in Frugalware too sometimes. If it's a laptop it uses an LCD and those have a default resolution for which it works best. Any other resolution and your screen won't probable have such a clear image. X works with no xorg.conf. Lacking an xorg.conf it sets the maximum resolution which is what you want. My advice is to either check the laptop specs somewhere or to take a LiveCD which boots into KDE or GNOME and find out what resolution it uses, here's how: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-do-i-find-out-screen-resolution-of-my-linux-desktop/ Let me know if you have further problems and mention what laptop model you have. Reinstall FW 1.1 but select only the base and devel packages. Just that and then after the install is done reboot. You should have a working system now , terminal only of course. Now do a pacman -Suy to update to the latest 1.1. Then pacman -S mc to get mc ( i find it usefull in text mode ). Now you cand do "lspci -nn" to find out exactly what video adapter you have , should be some Intel stuff probably. It all depends on you video adapter so let us know exactly what the lspci output the video adapter was. I suppose its the HorizSync and VertRefresh or some strange loaded module. I tried with ZenLive CD. Running it in "normal" mode I get the same result as for FW. If I run it in safe graphical mode everything is OK. The same with Knoppix LiveCD. In this case I was able to get a terminal and after modifying xorg.conf it works. Unluckily, at the moment, I cant get a terminal when try to run FW otherwise I could send what I think is incorrectly setted. Tomorrow Ill do some more "researches" and let you know. -- http://imageshack.us http://imageshack.us From mforce2 at gmail.com Wed Oct 7 22:23:04 2009 From: mforce2 at gmail.com (Marius Cirsta) Date: Wed, 7 Oct 2009 22:23:04 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [Frugalware-forums] cant configure screen In-Reply-To: <2578.4acc8077@forums.frugalware.org> Message-ID: <257e.4accf8a7@forums.frugalware.org> Hmm , are you sure safe mode is not some generic ( VESA I think ) driver ? It depends what you changed in xorg.conf. The way I suggested would enable you to do just what you want. You only insall base and devel and then no graphics. You do a lspci -nn , find out what video adapter you have. The you do a pacman -S xf86-video-intel of you have something made by Intel. If not you need to find out what driver you need , you might even need some proprietary stuff. After that just do an xconfig which should generate your xorg.conf. Modify it as needed and try it with startx. Once you've got X working it's a simple matter of pacman -S kde ( or gnome ) and a reboot will probably start kdm ( if not check in /etc/sysconfig/desktop ). If you know a better way though feel free to experiment but what I said should work. Never leave your system without user or root password, especially if it's connected to the internet. Reinstall and set both user and root passwords. Choose your username and passwords carefully ( make sure they don't include 'o' or any letter you can't type ). Now login with your username, let's say 'gally' and after you're logged in like that just type 'su'. That should prompt you for the root password and if all goes well you're now root and can proceed. You may have last done pacman-g2's synchronisation when ndiswrapper had been upgraded but before the newer kernel package was upgraded. In other words then, you could try - "pacman-g2 -Syu" This will do the package list synchronisation, and the system upgrade at the same time. As at the time I'm writing this, kernel was upgraded to *-2.6.31-3 25 hours ago, but ndiswrapper was only upgraded to match that kernel version 16 hours ago. When you do a package search for ndiswrapper on the Frugalware site, it quotes "kernel-2.6.31-2" as being a dependency. However the kernel has since been upgraded. I'm not sure exactly what causes this but it's possible that although the ndiswrapper's package has been upgraded to match the kernel's version, the newer version of ndiswrapper is still waiting to be built - i.e. created from source on one or more of the Frugalware build servers. In fact, here's a way of confirming this if you get a similar message in the future. When you search for ndiswrapper in the 'current' Frugalware repository, the version number is listed as 1.55-5. However in the same search results page, if you click on the Git "View entry" link, you can see all the files under Git version control which relate to the ndiswrapper package. When you click on the 'FrugalBuild' file's name you'll see its current contents, which quotes the version number as being "1.55-6". This confirms that although the FrugalBuild has been updated, the updated package is yet to be built, after which it must then be synchronised across all Frugalware mirrors. <25a0.4ae058d2@forums.frugalware.org> Just an idea to make things a bit more convenient for those who e.g. decide to use Frugalware for a home server... How about long term support releases? Every once in a while there could be a release that gets maybe 18 months support a la Ubuntu, with only bugfix and security updates. This would make things a lot more convenient for people who wanted Frugalware on a home server, and might help get Frugalware more recognized as a "serious" distro. On the other hand, it might be a lot of work... I don't know how practical it would be to implement. -- 10 PRINT "This language sucks!" 20 GOTO 10 From forum at frugalware.dk Thu Oct 22 21:55:12 2009 From: forum at frugalware.dk (Carl Andersen) Date: Thu, 22 Oct 2009 21:54:12 +0159 Subject: [Frugalware-forums] Desktop screenshots In-Reply-To: <259f.4adef891@forums.frugalware.org> References: <259f.4adef891@forums.frugalware.org> Message-ID: <4AE0B87C.60305@frugalware.dk> Devil505 skrev: > vanek2 wrote on Wed, 21 October 2009 12:41 > >> Here is mine: >> >> http://pix.toile-libre.org/?img=1256121500.png >> > > > Amazing, this wall remind me the end of 2001 space odyssey movie > > You have guessed right :-) -- Carl Andersen Frugalware Linux Contributor http://vemmelev-webdesign.dk/ http://vemmelev-biavl.dk/ http://frugalware.dk/ http://ligustica.dk/ From rxzes at reuters.com Mon Oct 26 06:53:29 2009 From: rxzes at reuters.com (Casino Euro-Dice) Date: Mon, 26 Oct 2009 00:53:29 -0500 Subject: [Frugalware-forums] Pay for real, win for real Message-ID: <47C37799.CEBF4E91@reuters.com> Ready to play for real? You also see a few distros, such as Gentoo or Slackware, designed for advanced users. But you rarely see a distro for “intermediate users.” Frugalware is one of those few distros. According to the Frugalware site, Frugalware is “a general purpose linux distribution, designed for intermediate users (who are not afraid of text mode).” Upon booting up the live CD, you are greeted by a nice terminal. No graphical interface. Quite unusual in modern distros. Accompanying that, though, was a helpful explanation of what to do, which is important since you need to know the username and password and because you have to use the command xstart, not startx, to get into any sort of GUI. Once you login and type “xstart” you are taken into a familiar KDE 3.5 environment. Despite the almost total lack of Frugalware branding, the theme used is quite nice. Since part of Frugalware’s philosophy is to not mess with upstream applications, you are unlikely to discover many changes from a default KDE setup plus added applications. The most recent stable release of Frugalware came in March of this year when 0.8 (Kalgan) was released. The next stable release, 0.9 (Solaria), is expected in September, but you can, of course, always check out the development releases. If you are finding some of the more popular distros too newbie-friendly and you want a geekier distro, without going all the way to Gentoo, you might want to check out Frugalware http://www.bestessays.com/.
