I have this strange problem that's getting on my nerves so I submit it to your wisdom. Shortly: I have a Dell Dimension 4700 (not a laptop) with a radeon video card in it (if that matters...) which used to run perfectly under Getorin. I recently updated the system (i'm not hasty) to Locris, and after reboot... nothing! Precisions: By nothing, I mean I can read on the screen the grub command line and another one. see below: kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6 ro quiet [Linux-bzimage, setup=0x3200, size=0x334c40] the kernel line is the same as before. I bet the second means the kernel is loaded, but then the screen stays like that. I can hear the hd scratching for a few seconds, then nothing more. When I boot removing the "quiet", the last line I can see before the thing freezes is: ...blablabla... ata_piix 0000:00:1f.2: PCI INT C -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20 ata_piix 0000:00:1f.2: MAP [P0 P2 P1 P3] (that is chineese to me...) What I've done: I chrooted the system from a knoppix LiveCD and found out that everything was normal to me (but I'm not a pro). I reinstalled grub (but the windows dualboot worked so I don't think it's grub). One thing was really weird: /dev was empty... First question: how? why? Hermier helped me on that and think it is a fs corruption or something. So I removed the / and swap partitions, removed the extended partition they were into, and made a proper install with current (by the way, fwife works great!). ...reboot......SAME THING! exactly the same thing. same thing during boot, and /dev is empty. Second question: that's weird, huh? Well, sorry for the long post and bad english. If you have time to answer me, thank you. Have you looked over the contents of the main log files - contained in /var/log (if I recall correctly)? They may have more detailed information about what's going wrong. Of course this assumes that you are somehow able to boot, or get access to these files, perhaps from another Frugalware installation.
