Describe your organization.
Frugalware is a project to create a fast Slackware based Linux distribution aimed at intermediate users.
Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2007? What do you hope to gain by participating?
We are applying to GSoC 2007 for several reasons. One of the things is to get some projects done that we don't have either time or knowledge to do by ourselves. We would also like to gain valuable experience by working with students, and would like them to become regular contributors, or who knows, perhaps even developers.
Did your organization participate in GSoC 2005 or 2006? If so, please summarize your involvement and the sucesses and failures of your student projects. (optional)
No, we didn't participate.
If your organization has not previously participated in GSoC, have you applied in the past? If so, for what year(s)? (optional)
No, we haven't applied in the past.

About The Program

What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?
We talked to SoC mentors from other projects for the previous years and learnt that disappearing students do happen. We will try to narrow down our students selection before by seeing how dedicated they are, how passionate they are about working on Frugalware. But of course such things always happen, and this year is not an exception. We will try to hold them as much as we can by slowly 'merging' them in our community, and if they disappear we will try to contact them by all means we have to avoid/resolve situations none of us would like.
What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?
It is unlikely that this will happen however if it does happen, we will have one of our other mentors stand in for them while they are away.
What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your project's community before, during and after the program?
Close teamwork with others working on Frugalware, helping them to get involved and get going. We have several communication channels, and we will try to get him/her involved with our daily routine, which isn't only development, but jokes, talks, and all in all, to make him/her become a full member of our community.
What will you do to ensure that your accepted students stick with the project after GSoC concludes?
We hope our open mind and the atmosphere will inspire them even after SoC ends that they will stay, and become valuable contributors and friends.
Thanks!
